The editor is a retired teacher who believes that the importance of Ethos as a dynamic influence for "the good" in the life of a school is largely overlooked. He want to raise awareness about what Ethos is and its importance in establishing a school climate that actively promotes the spiritual, moral, ethical and cultural development of young people, their capacity to think for themselves and to live their lives based on a set of ethically based values and principles, together with a powerful sense of right and wrong.

What is Ethos?
Ethos is a much misunderstood word that is frequently used in education to describe the aims, aspirations and goals, values and overall ambience together with the social climate of a school.
A positive ethos and culture which promotes positive relationships and pro social attitudes and behaviour is at the heart of every good school. It reflects the way that the school operates, interprets its values, delivers it’s policies and curriculum and above all its sense of community and working towards an agreed common goal. It’s approaches will support the individual needs of children and young people in their school, recognise that parents and carers are key partners in their children's learning and focus on the wellbeing of every child to ensure they are safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included. In short, it represents the living force or spirit of what the school stands for and the way that it operates, a case of not “do as we say”, but rather “do as we do”.
